OK, back to politics for a minute. I know nobody really likes to read these rants, and instead wants links to dancing monkeys, but please indulge me. Actually, it isn't even politics I want to bring up. It's a little something called basic human rights. Something we've typically aimed for in this country - ever heard of a chunk of text claiming "all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?"
A federal judge here ruled today that the Bush administration has been wrongly blocking terrorism suspects held in Cuba from fighting their detention, and that the review procedure set up to determine whether they are "enemy combatants" is inherently unfair and unconstitutional.
Innocent until proven guilty...but detain, without any rights.
Unfortunately, this is the why the Administration is pushing "Freedom Laws", to make it easier to detain terrorists. However, what is to prevent regular old criminals from being labled a terrorist and then striped of any rights all in the name of "freedom"? We are told to believe that this will not happen because the government would not abuse its power.
Well, we all know that they are very well capable of lying. Even when caught in their lie they just proclaim, "Its for freedom!"
A report just came out about the knowledge that H.S. students have on their first amendment rights. Lets just say that if this trend in lack of knowledge continues basic human rights and liberties will be easy to strip away.
