White House Pays for Public Support

What do you do when your approval rating is declining and so is support for your major legislative reforms? Pay people to publicly like said reforms.

Seeking to build support among black families for its education reform law, the Bush administration paid a prominent black pundit $240,000 to promote the law on his nationally syndicated television show and to urge other black journalists to do the same.

Aaaah, mental prostitution. Once again, we have a "moral" administration?

Update (01/09) - apparently this story has legs, it's all over the Times, the Political Wire, and even my friend Jonathan's website (among many, many other places).
