No, not basketball. I don't even want to go there. (Although, next year will be exciting with a full bench and a seasoned group of veterans.)
I'm more interested in Badger Football, particularly this news:
Middleton High School junior wide receiver Nick Toon is expected to give an oral commitment to the University of Wisconsin football team today. ... Nick is the son of former Badgers standout receiver Al Toon, who ranks third in school history in career receiving yards (2,103) and receptions (131) and was a first-round draft pick of the New York Jets in 1985. ... Nick Toon has some of the same physical traits that made his father such an exceptional receiver.
"There's a lot of similarity there," Simon said. "He's just extremely athletic. He runs so well. He's got a great vertical leap, just outstanding vertical leap and his hands ... he catches everything in the area code.
"If it's in the area code, he comes down with it. He's an explosive athlete."
So he's listed as being around 6-foot-2 and 195 lbs, with a great vertical leap and great hands. The scouting guys list Nick as being also heavily pursued by Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. I can't wait to see him in the cardinal and white in '07.
The big question - how is UW suddenly turning into a receiver school? Not that I'm complaining, but Chris Chambers and Lee Evans weren't exactly featured in our Barry Alvarez ground game offense (which is too bad for us, seeing how talented they have become under passing-oriented NFL schemes). I realize that we've recently been airing things out a bit (see B. Williams), but we may have to do so even more now that Calhoun is hitting the road. Hopefully Bielema will keep opening things up a bit and fully develop this wide receiver.
I didn't want to make any comments about your poor basketball team right now. I'm glad I'm a Marquette fan even if we did lose to you earlier. We would kill ya now. These next few years should be incredible for this rivalry.
