The Wisconsin Badgers take on the Illini tonight. Badgers have a 38 game home winning streak and the Illini are undefeated this season. Should be a good game...tip off at 9pm eastern, 8pm central converage by ESPN.
I love this quote by Illinois coach Bruce Weber: "So, I’m not sure we’ll be the favorite. I’d like it if we can be the underdog this time." LinkLet's see, his team has been ranked No. 1 for over two months. His team is also undefeated. And that's supposed to make them the underdog?
This reminds me of times on the political trail - whenever a debate approaches, each candidate tries to humble themselves in order to set low expectations and try to get people rooting for the "little guy." Likewise, if a candidate can convince people that he isn't supposed to win a debate - just as when John Kerry claimed Bush had never lost a debate (until this past year, that is) - then even a marginal showing ends up looking golden in a David v. Goliath sort of manner.
The one interesting notion that psychology presents is that people start playing political mind-games like this when they are afraid of a future loss. If Coach Weber wasn't somewhat afraid, he wouldn't even comment on such a ridiculous notion such as this. But I suppose we'll find out soon enough if that fear is well-grounded. Go Bucky!
