I know few of you will be as excited about free credit reports as I am, but it's good information to have. As of today (if you live in the Midwest, see the rollout schedule if you live elsewhere), you can get a free credit report once a year from each of the three major credit bureaus. Even if the federal roll-out doesn't allow it yet, your state might. Also, some advise...don't take all three right now, although you can compare them to each other all at once then you have to wait another year before you can do it again (for free).
Of course all this doesn't give you your credit score, but rather the your credit file disclosure which tells you all the things that affect your score. This site is sposored by the credit bureaus themselves, but if you go to each of their websites, you can find other (more expensive) options to find out information about your credit.
Hmmm. I guess I don't really need a credit report yet. I tried one, and it told me that I have student loans and a few credit cards. Didn't see that coming. :)
