Huh. Those silly Jesuits from down I-94 have gone off the deep end with another name change.
Many moons ago, it used to be the Marquette 'Warriors.' In the 1990s, the University felt some pressure to move away from that team name as it was disrespectful of Native Americans. I can certainly understand that feeling, but I'm not sure how the name 'Warriors' only connotates images of Native Americans - to me I only think about fighters or combattants when I hear the name. Heck, even the Golden State Warriors still use the name.
Regardless, in 1994 Marquette decided to switch the team name to the 'Golden Eagles.' People weren't exactly thrilled with the switch. So much so, that several alumni offered $2 million to the University to change the name back to the 'Warriors.' People felt that the name was generic, wimpy and uninspiring. Personally, I think it wasn't the name that was wimpy, but the actual teams that took the court. (And as an aside, do you have any other sports than just basketball? We Badgers would love to entertain you on the gridiron or on the ice too...Have your people call our people.)
To remedy the situation, Marquette went off the deep end. As of Wednesday, the team name is nowthe Marquette 'Gold.'
Lame.
As if the Stanford Cardinal and the Harvard Crimson weren't lame enough, there's now another 'color' team. Even a good friend from Marquette agrees, in this excerpt from a recent email:
"I think that Warriors is a way better nickname and possible mascot, but I can understand that it would be difficult to get away from the Native American imagery that we have had in the past. I would have been perfectly happy to stay with the Golden Eagles as long as the whole thing could have been dropped.
But instead we get this stupid nickname of Gold. What the F is that? Are we the color? The mineral? The Bling? ... It is only a nickname I realize, but it is still something very important to those that have graduated and attend a univeristy.
